Is your work life affecting your personal life and relationships?

If you are a motivated individual trying to climb the corporate ladder, it can be easy to lose yourself and your life outside of work. However, while that promotion is important for your career, you shouldn’t lose sight of your personal life. With the world moving faster than ever, it’s hard not to, but if you lose sight of your personal life, you may one day wake up and realize your life has been absorbed by work. This simply isn't healthy, and can quickly lead to you feeling burnt out.

Finding this balance between your work life and personal life can come in different ways, you may have to reevaluate your personal goals, tweak your calendar for time with friends, find a new flexible job, or maybe even consider changing your career. If a career change isn’t on your list of things to do just yet, you can start finding this balance using these five simple tips:

  1. Schedule Time for Family and Friends

Sit down and schedule time out to spend with your kids, your significant other or your friends; if you don’t, you may slowly fall out of their lives. Try any of the following: spend an evening playing board games with the family, take your significant other out to dinner, or spend an afternoon catching up with a friend over coffee. Positive social interaction with the important people in your life is necessary in order to be happy.

  2. Make Time for Yourself

If you're using your free time trying to get ahead at work, then it's time to reclaim some time back for yourself. Find an activity you enjoy and spend some time doing it by yourself. It's good to turn your mind off and simply enjoy yourself without any social pressure. Go for a long hike, absorb yourself in video games, watch your favorite movie, or read a book. Time alone can help you recharge yourself for those hectic work days.

  3. Find a Hobby

A hobby is a great for you to forget work, but still challenge yourself. Think about your interest and passions and find a hobby around them, Whether your interest fall in model airplanes, painting, languages or cooking, take your interest farther and make them into your hobbies. If you have kids, find a hobby that your kids can participate in every once in a while. Puzzles and riddles are great examples of a hobbies to share with family or alone. You can do on your own when you need some alone time or with the family when you want to schedule some family time.

  4. Exercise on a Regular Basis

No matter how busy you are, don’t forget about your health and make the time to get active a couple times a week. Going for a 15 or 20 minute run every morning can do wonders for your energy levels, your focus and your mood - not to mention your physical health! By exercising on a regular basis, you'll also help keep your stress levels down, which can actually help you perform better at work. Why not be active with some friends? Grab a couple of friends and join a recreational adult sports league. If you like, take the extra step and consider joining a gym or enroll into yoga lessons.

  5. Get Plenty of Sleep

People often cut back on their sleep in return for more time to get ahead of work. If you're not getting enough sleep, your body is going to feel it. You’ll find yourself tired and less energetic during the day, which is bound to affect your focus at work. Providing your body enough sleep is integral to maintaining your body’s health which many people often oversee as they exhaust late hours to finish work.
