Customer Retention in Theory and Practice

Anyone interested in a WSI franchise probably has given at least some thought to the idea of customer retention.

After all, if most income is generated through repeat business, it stands to reason that you would want to put some effort into keeping your existing customer base happy. Now, the theory is sound and straightforward, but we thought a nice step-by-step outline might come in handy when you’re getting started.

- Customers want to feel that they own the product.
This can be tricky when dealing with digital advertising. After all, you’re the digital marketing expert, you did all the work, so how can they feel it’s theirs per se? This is why the interview and consultation portion of the marketing process are both so vital. Make sure the customer feels that their input is definitively tied to the final product they’re getting, and they’ll feel more comfortable coming back later.
- Touch base.
Be it through email newsletters, annual calls to check up on their company and see if they have new needs or any other means you use to keep in touch, do just that. Let the customer know you appreciated their business and would value their future business, as well. This kind of repeat referencing keeps you top-of-mind and makes you an easy choice when the time comes to start another project.
- Reward loyal customers.
Consider offering a small freebie to customers who have been particularly valuable to you. If someone has referred several family members or colleagues to your service, or has come to you every time he or she needs a new marketing campaign, let them know how much you appreciate the effort they’ve made on your behalf by offering them some small service or another, such as a free audit of how their site is performing or whatnot.
